Gotham's class society is rife with crime and unemployment, leaving segments of the population disenfranchised and impoverished. Arthur suffers from a medical disorder that causes him to laugh at inappropriate times, and depends on social services for medication. After a gang of delinquents attacks Arthur in an alley, his co-worker, Randall, gives him a gun for protection. Arthur meets his neighbour, single mother Sophie Dumond, and invites her to his upcoming stand-up comedy show at a nightclub. While entertaining at a children's hospital, Arthur's gun falls out of his pocket. Randall lies that Arthur bought the gun himself and Arthur is fired. On the subway, still in his clown makeup, Arthur is beaten by three drunken Wayne Enterprises businessmen who were harassing a female passenger; he shoots two in self-defense and executes the third. Unit 10 Learning Assignment A

Compare and contrast the narrative and stylistic codes and conventions of two thriller films using detailed examples to illustrate your points.

In this assignment, I will be comparing and contrasting the narrative of Halloween (2018) and Panic room.I will also be comparing the stylistic codes and conventions of the two thriller films.

The narrative structure of both films is linear . A linear narrative is the most common form of narration, where events are largely portrayed in chronological order, that is, telling the events in the order in which they occurred both Halloween and Panic room are told in chronological order. The format for Halloween is a featured film while the Panic room is a short film.both Halloween and Panic room have sub-genre. Halloween sub-genres are horror and thriller some people argue that Halloween 2018 is a horror film but it contains a lot of the thriller genre within it. Panic room sub-genre are crime, drama and thriller Panic room contains a lot of drama due to the suspensions in every scene. The purpose of Halloween was to bring a close to the Halloween film but they left the last film in a cliffhanger as Michael Myers was left to burn. The purpose of the Panic room was to make money. The plot for Halloween has been 40 years since Laurie Strode survived a vicious attack from crazed killer Michael Myers on Halloween night. Locked up in an institution, Myers manages to escape when his bus transfer goes horribly wrong. Laurie now faces a terrifying showdown when the masked madman returns to finish what he started 40 year ago. The plot for Panic room  follows Meg Altman (Jodie Foster) and her young daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart) play a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with three intruders - Burnham (Forest Whitaker), Raoul (Dwight Yoakam) and Junior (Jared Leto) - during a brutal home invasion. But the room itself is the focal point because what the intruders really want is inside it.

Whilst researching the thriller genre I have found that the thriller film often has a female protagonist, in the film’s “Halloween” and “Panic Room” we have to follow female protagonist Laurie strode played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Meg Altman played by Jodi Foster are both the main protagonist. In “Halloween” we are first introduced to Laurie after the opening titles which are at 11:00 we get multiple jump shots with a match shot of Laurie opening the door which is filled with lock then we get a mid-shot followed with tilt up to Laurie's face. The mise en scene shows that she isolated her lifestyle due to all lock and the door but also how she cautious. the lighting in the scene was high key. The only thing similar to the Panic room is that we're introduced to Meg after the opening credits as she is led around her new house with her daughter by an estate agent who is explaining the house history. We can see that the stylist code is thriller due to the ominous/suspense music in both films. Both Halloween and Panic rooms have a female protagonist. As they are the most important characters in the film. The protagonist is conventional as being female due to a female being stereotypical as weak in thriller/horror films. Therefore the audience is invited from their perspective to see the narrative of the film. Despite the genre, it appeals to both male and female audiences and has a certain age range 15 and over.

While researching the thriller genre I have found out that thriller film usually takes place in the city or the outskirts of the city but also has a sense of isolation even if the location is the city. In Halloween, Laurie becomes trapped by her fear of Michael Myers as, over the years, she has isolated  herself and interactions with people and lives by herself in the outskirts of the city and pushes her family way to protect them. Her life is altered as the antagonist break free and tries to kill her and her family.in Panic room Meg and her daughter are isolated in their house while the antagonist tries to steal the money that in their home which was left by the previous owner. In Halloween at the most thrillers scene was when we see a long shot of Michael Myers then a jump cut close up of the knife in his left hand standing in Laurie yard at this moment in the film it shows that Laurie is isolated in her house and nowhere to run to but some people might say that she isn't isolated due to her daughter and granddaughter being there with her. Also, the characters in' Panic Room' are imprisoned in the Panic room that is designed to protect them but instead isolated them from the rest of the world. There is a two-shot of the Meg and her daughter Sarah sat beside thee steel doors which are shut and a cut to their point of view as they watch the antagonists which are threatening them from their camera network. Both Halloween and the Panic room tell the audience that if you isolate yourself from society as nothing good would come. Isolation is commonly used in a thriller film due to isolation being the weakness of the human species.

Whilst researching the thriller genre I have found that the thriller film often has a male antagonist, in the film’s “Halloween” and “Panic room” we follow the main antagonist Michael Myers played by James Jude Courtney and the main antagonist in a Panic room is Raoul who is played by Dwight Yoakam. In “Halloween” we are first introduced to Michael Myers in prison strapped up which you usually see in a psychiatric ward this tells the audience that he is mentally unstable and has some psychological trauma to the event which played a couple of years ago the first shot we see him in a long shot/establishing shot chained to the flour then a jump cut to an over the shoulder shot thru the sequence we never really see his face we only see his beard which tells the audience that he aged the take place 5 minutes in. The mise en scene shows that he isolated lifestyle due to him being in jail with no contact with the outside world. the lighting in the scene was high key.The only thing similar to the Panic room is that we're introduced to the main antagonist Raoul breaking into Megs home we see an over the shoulder shot but it out of focus and we see Raoul outside waiting to come in then it cut to a mid-shot of him walking into the room, the lighting is low key. we can see that the stylist code is thriller due to the ominous/suspense music in both films especially in Halloween when Michael Myers's name is spoken we hear diegetic screaming from the other inmates. both Halloween and Panic rooms have both male antagonists. Thus they are the main antagonist  . The antagonist is conventional as being men due to men having a psychotic nature and due to wanting things more. this allows the audience to see the psychotic behavior. Despite the genre, it appeals to both male and female audiences and has a certain age range 15 and over.
